Where Were These Refugee Sympathizers When Obama Was Bombing Their Countries?

Protests at nearly every major airport have erupted in the last several days in response to President Trump’s immigration ban on seven Muslim majority countries. Protestors call the 90 day suspension of travel from individuals from Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, Syria, and Libya a human rights violation that does not represent American values. Some have likened it as a first step toward policies like the internment of Japanese citizens during World War II. I only have one question for these protestors; Why weren’t you protesting when President Obama was bombing these nations, the reason why their residents are refugees in the first place?

During his tenure as President Obama launched airstrikes in 5 of the 7 countries affected by the immigration ban; Somalia, Iraq, Yemen, Syria, and Libya. He supported backing the Free Syrian Army, whose closest ally in the Syrian civil war is Al Nusra, A.K.A. Al Qaeda’s Syria branch, causing incredible instability in the region and providing ISIS with a weakened Assad regime to fight. He supported toppling Muammar Gaddafi’s regime, leading to an unprecedented amount of instability in Libya. He reigned down air strikes in Yemen, Somalia, and of course Iraq, killing more civilians than immigrants detained at the airports this weekend. It is indisputable that the United States foreign policy under the previous administration led to instability, and death in the nations affected by the travel ban.

So, to these protestors the act of limiting travel for these 7 nations for 90 days is more egregious than actually sending missiles into the countries. The protestors seem completely oblivious to the fact that the reason why Syrians have to flee their country, which is in the midst of a civil war, is because the United States has been pumping arms into the region and backing factions in the conflict. They are oblivious to the fact that we have been air striking Yemen for 8 years. They are oblivious to the fact that the former president, whom they now seem to liken to a god with Trump being elected, was responsible for the deaths of civilians in all of the countries affected by the travel ban.

So it begs the questions: Why are you out protesting this, when you didn’t care at all about actual atrocities being committed just a couple of years ago? The answer is… because Trump did it. Had President Obama enacted this same travel ban during his presidency, like the 6 month travel ban he placed on Iraq in 2011, he would have encountered no resistance from loyal Democrats who dare not speak ill of their golden boy. These protestors on not out protesting because they have intense love for refugees and Muslims, they are out protesting because the latest virtue that Democrats need to signal to show how tolerant they are is that all refugees are innocent flowers that need protection, and anyone who is against letting them all into our country is an Islamophobic bigot.

If these people truly cared about the safety of refugees they would have spoken up when our former president was tearing their countries apart. They would have said something when we were arming an Al Qaeda ally. They would have said something when we were droning children in Yemen. They would have said something when we supported regime change in Libya. Alas, these people do not really care about refugees. They are interested in appearing to be tolerant. They are interested in showing the world “we won’t stand for this type of bigotry!”.

They are virtue signaling to the absolute highest degree.

So, you can have a problem with Trump. You can have a problem with the immigration ban. You, as an American, enjoy the freedom to criticize our president; to voice your opinions of opposition. But, if you are an outraged and appalled protestor, and you still hold President Obama near and dear to your heart, you are either a hypocrite, or oblivious.
